Psychology is full of wholesome fun. One particular experiment from the University of Virginia asked a group of students some hardcore moral questions. The one that stumped most people was this: Is it immoral to let a dog willingly lick your genitals while you masturbate? Many answered yes,...

Everyone’s favourite anarchists Against Me! proved that they’ve still got a rebellious streak after inciting a bit of chaos at a show in Rochester, New York last week. They found out that the venue was overcharging for tickets at the door, so frontman Tom Gabel demanded they refund the fans the difference. They also took to stage and slagged the venue for being shifty bastards, “to this piece...

“What is djent?” you might ask. Djent, my good men and women of metal, is thusly: ‘djent’ is “an onomatopoeia for a heavily palm-muted, distorted guitar chord. It is considered to have been inspired by tech-metal band Meshuggah. Typically, the word is used to refer to music that makes use of this sound, to the sound itself, or to the...

My past few attempts at finding a suitably shit film to review for Optimistic Norris have been wrought with disappointment. X-Men: First Class was pretty good, Super 8 rocked, and three out of the four films I've managed to review so far weren't really bad at all. My reviews weren't even very funny or entertaining. All in all, one might say that I'm a pretty poor excuse for a column, and that...

You’re having a great day. You’ve just helped an old lady across the road, given money to a busker and now you’re off home to read the latest Moral Melbourne. You're feeling really good about yourself.

As you walk back down Johnston Street, you spot someone driving a battered up old Ford Falcon trying to pull out of a parking spot. You see them scrape the shit out of the parked...

Before they came to resent one another,
Professor X saw Magneto as a brother,
And to stop Bacon and Jones,
They recruit freaks with hormones,
A good way for the franchise to recover.

So far, 2011 has been the best year for metal since 2001 saw classic releases all coming from Converge, Isis and Opeth (Blackwater Park, fark yers!). Shee-hit, even ’04 was good times with the Dillinger Escape Plan’s Miss Machine and Mastodon’s monstrous Leviathan. I can’t remember ever being so bowled over by class-A heaviosity so early in the piece, though. Blut...

So I hear along a grapevine, a twisted, mangled mess of good intentions and miscommunications probably, that a well-known hardcore band who recently employed a new singer, made the dude sign a contractual agreement that insisted that he do so many pit calls and shout outs per live set.

First it seemed completely implausible but the more I thought about it, the more likely it...

Snowtown’s not for the faint-hearted,
“Bodies In Barrels” and how it all started,
But where credit's due,
Is the director's debut,
Going places that should be uncharted.

So friends and I got to arguing about what makes a good live show. And apart from all the intricacies of being in a room with a hundred sweaty, over-stimulated strangers, when it comes to the actual band on stage, there’s something to be said for energy. I see local bands every week, all of varying status and talent, but I’ll be damned if the one sure fire way to send me shuffling awkwardly...
