Young and Jackson prides itself on being Australia's most famous pub. While that title may be a little dubious, it's certainly an iconic establishment. Located directly opposite Flinders Street Station, it's one of the first things visitors to Melbourne's city centre see. It's also a haven of calm (most days) amid the hustle and bustle of the CBD. Duck in after lunch on a weekday and you'll find a handful of patrons enjoying the vintage pub atmosphere. The front bar (and attached lounge) might not be particularly outlandish, but therein lies the appeal. Young and Jackson is 'old school'. It's been here since 1861, and with its ornate ceiling, classic decor and 'pub' carpet, it retains much of that traditional charm. If that's the kind of scene you're after, than early afternoon visits are definitely best - things tend to get considerably more rowdy in the evenings; especially on weekends when they have live cover bands. Upstairs, the cocktail lounge is a whole different kettle of fish - so to speak. The bar stools and long bench top tables are nowhere to be seen; instead you'll find old leather couches, ottomans, palm trees and large framed photos documenting the pub's rich heritage. The drinks menu is also more elaborate, featuring a full cocktail and tapas selection. Those looking for a comfortable pub to enjoy an ale (or a cocktail), will find Young and Jackson laidback, friendly and very conveniently located. Get there early and the upstairs levels also provide spectacular views out over Federation square.
The Metropolitan hotel has been a Melbourne landmark for more than 150 years. Bordering the historical legal precinct, it is within easy walking distance of the major hotels and theatres. The bar, soft leather seating and contemporary decor create a stylish upscale feel. The hotel transforms itself according to the time of day. Throughout the morning there is a breakfast menu and barista quality coffee. At lunchtime the Hotel morphs into a stylish eatery and bar. You can have a relaxed meal in the informal downstairs cafe area. In the evening, workers and professionals surround the bar area to wind down before going home or wind up before going out. Many seduced by the social ambience or the smiles of the friendly and efficient staff, stick around until evening turns into night.
