Sunshine, a Bar-BQ, some great live music with a twist of humour, conviviality, beers and fundraising for a good cause. What more could you want to celebrate the beginning of summer and bring together Melbournians with a passion for community radio and live music? RRR BBQ day held at CERES Environment Park on the edge of the Merri Creek in East Brunswick has become an institution on the first Sunday in December.

Starting at midday with a live broadcast from CERES, alongside a fundraising BBQ with veggie burgers, of course with proceeds going to Brunswick East primary school. The day kicked off in earnest at 2pm with JVG Guitar Method being hosted live from the stage at CERES by none other than Johnny Van Goes, featuring the RRR BBQ band backing a string of vocalists who made up a who’s who of the Melbourne live music scene from Tim Rodgers to JVG himself singing cover songs with a BBQ related twist to their lyrics.

First up was a tribute to Leonard Cohen by Peter Ewing which was well received by the audience. There was dancing and merriment through to 4pm when many of the punters sauntered up the road to continue the festivities at The Lomond Hotel where Dan Warner, who also featured in the BBQ day band had his yearly post BBQ day gig. The Lomond is an old school venue that has been a long term supporter of the Melbourne live music scene, the perfect setting to end the day. Many old friends and familiar faces partied into the evening.
