Who are we chatting to? Maya – 23-year-old striving musician. I’m a singer-songwriter fronting a seven-piece band.

What do you reckon people will say you sound like? A bit like Amy Winehouse, Lauryn Hill, Sade and Adele.

What do you love about making music? I love that it captures the energy of the moment you make it. It’s a pure way of expressing yourself without having to know how people respond.

What do you hate about the music industry? I don’t like that a lot of it is now driven by how many followers you have online, as you can buy followers but you can’t buy talent and I think that’s mixing up a lot of people’s perceptions of good music.

What inspires your music most? When I get hurt or fall in love. It’s always feeling strongly about a situation. That gets me straight to the notebook. I’ve always been a person to write down my feelings.

If you could travel back in time and show one of your musical heroes your stuff, who would it be? Jimi Hendrix, maybe we could jam blues for a minute or Janis Joplin – she had a lot of wisdom.

What can a punter expect from your live show? Very high-intensity truths. I make each show for the viewer. I bring art, dancers, designers and fashion walks to shock and excite people. It’s not just music, it’s a whole night of natural expression.

What’ve you got to sell CD-wise? I have my brand new EP FUTURE SOUL.
