Nine Melbourne acts were announced among 498 others from around the world who are the latest to be invited to play South By Southwest (SXSW) in Austin, Texas.


Altogether 2000 acts will play between Monday March 13 and Sunday March 19.

Work is to start on the $20 million upgrade of the Palais Theatre in St Kilda to be completed by early next year. The State Government has appointed Built Pty Ltd, a construction company with extensive experience with complex heritage buildings, to deliver the project. Reports this morning were that Stereosonc has been permanently axed by promoters Totem OneLove and SFX Entertainment. But they say it’s just taking a break in 2016.

Next month’s regional Maitreya Festival at Wooroonook Lakes (near Charlton) has started VCAT (Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal) proceedings against Buloke Shire Council and Victoria Parks. It wants them to approve a three year permit so it could plan its events over a longer period.

The current operator of the iconic Palais Theatre in St Kilda has been dropped from the shortlist of applicants vying to run the 89-year old venue on behalf of Port Phillip Council.

The issue over renovations to St Kilda’s The Esplanade Hotel has been resolved.


This week, Port Phillip Council unanimously approved internal and external renovations to the 138-year old Espy. This includes allowing the 145sqm rooftop terrace on the second floor to go ahead, but on the proviso it closes its retractable roof by 10pm and has no live music.
