Safe

Winner of the 2013 Short Film Palme d’Or, Safe is a suspenseful 13-minute thriller set in the seedy underworld of illegal gambling houses.

When a student takes up a job as a money teller at an illegal gambling house, she knows it isn’t entirely safe. She starts to feel comfortable in this environment, but sometimes the safest places can present the most unexpected danger.

Moon Byong-gon’s film effectively communicates the intensely claustrophobic, unsettling atmosphere that is the underground gambling house, while Minji Lee heightens this effect as the confident, yet naive, college student. Safe succeeds on a number of levels – perhaps as a commentary on the ability to be trapped in a capitalist society but also, more simply, as a truly gripping crime thriller.
