Q&A: Moulin Beige

Tell us about The Moulin Beige.

It started as a performance night/ party in the lounge room of a big old house in Ashgrove, Queensland.  A lot of us went to try out ideas for new routines there.  Then it moved to “The Joynt”, a great little bar in Brisbane.  And when I moved to Melbourne it moved with me- now it is going to be on every week at the Burlesque Bar.  It is still just a performance/ party night.

What’s the ethos behind it?

We wanted to create a performance environment where a variety of comic forms are in the one line up.  It is an opportunity for performers to be influenced and inspired by a whole bunch of different styles and maybe to create new routines, characters and collaborations.

What goes on?

It is a vaudeville night- think funny, think different.  Think magic, ventriloquism, puppetry, dance, circus, stand up comedy, musical comedy, character comedy and burlesque.  And post show we play old film footage of Buster Keaton, Chaplin and vaudeville routines.

Who’s performing?

Guests in Oct/ Nov include: absurdist clown Daniel Oldaker, Anna Anastasia, Poppy Cherry & Bijoux, Clara Cupcakes, vaudevillian Rod Lara and The Oddeties,  Ruby Rubberlegs, Bridget Boyle, Comedians Bart Freebairn, Matt Burton, Luke McGregor, Daniel Connell and Ted Wilson.  Ventriloquist Sarah Jones, T. H. Bauman, Johnny Danger and Cabaret Brass Bear Dirk Hoult
