Opening the 2017 season comes The Encounter, fresh from critically acclaimed performances at the Edinburgh International Festival, The Barbican and on Broadway. Setting the bar high for the rest of the year, Encounter tells the story of one man who becomes lost in the Amazon in a journey that will forever change his worldview.

Little Emperors will make its world premiere, exploring the children, struggles and stories of those born during China’s One Child Policy, which finally came to an end after 40 years in January this year.

The Homosexuals, Or Faggots comes from one half of queer theatre outlaws Sisters Grimm, with playwright Declan Greene (I Am A Miracle, Calpurnia Descending) delving into the absurdity of bi-partisan hypocrisy and the boundaries of political correctness.

Elsewhere, Piece for Person and Ghetto Blaster asks if conflict really does change things for the better through an inspired combination of performance art and dance, seminal Australian production Away returns under the guidance of Matthew Lutton, Wild Bore dives into hilarious political comedy and Revolt. She Said. Revolt Again. makes its Australian premiere.

Rounding it all out, comes Heart Is A Wasteland from acclaimed Indigenous storytellers John and Margaret Harvey in a world premiere alongside the darkly comic You’re Not Alone, an adaptation of The Elephant Man, and The Black Rider in a collaboration between Victorian Opera, Malthouse Theatre, Meow Meow and Paul Capsis in an Australian premiere.

Closing the season comes The Testament of Mary, as one of Australia’s most popular screen and theatre actors, Pamela Rabe, returns to the Malthouse to give voice to one of the world’s great silenced icons – resulting in a provocative depiction of one of the most beloved figures in history.
