This year’s opening night film is Australian stage play turned big screen movie Alex and Eve, Directed by Peter Andrikidis, it is a feel-good Australian story about dating in a multicultural landscape. Lead actor Richard Brancatisano, Tony Nikolakopoulos and George Kapiniaris will be in attendance at the special opening night screening.

The 19-day festival of Greek culture on screen captures the best of cinema, everything from drama to thrillers, and comedies to reflections on the Greek financial crisis.  The impact of the debt crisis is detailed in both feature film Family Member, where an average Cypriot family sail into murky ethical waters in an effort to stay financially afloat, and documentary Agora: From Democracy to the Market. Dramatic thrillers include Dimitris Bitos’ Fan and Athenian underworld tale Wednesday 04:45. In Magic Men, a 78 year-old Greek Holocaust survivor and his son embark on a road trip from Israel to Greece in search of a magician who saved the father’s life during World War II, while in Forever two lonely souls, Kostas and Anna, unwittingly find a connection against a wintry and desolate Athens.

In the short films program, Australian Greek stories are explored in documentaries and short fictions including Fields To Dream telling the story of the South Melbourne Football Club, and Hit in which a seemingly simple grab for cash goes catastrophically wrong.
