'Gender Equal' crossing lights are coming to Melbourne this week
Melbourne's first 'gender equal' pedestrian crossing lights will be installed this week, with distinct female walking signals set to light up the CBD.
It comes as a move to reinforce gender equality and equal gender representation, following a push from lobby group the Committee for Melbourne.
The Equal Crossings initiative will roll out at the intersection of Swanston and Flinders Streets, with a VicRoads-sanctioned trial to run for 12 months.

Following the trial, organisers will seek to implement a one-to-one ratio of male and female representation at crossings throughout Victoria.
