Forum Theatre's 1920s mosaic restored after 50 years
A historic mosaic that's been hidden under carpet for 50 years at Melbourne's iconic Forum Theatre has been restored to its former glory.
The restoration took three months of 19-hour days to complete, bringing an original mosaic first completed in 1929 back to life - painstakingly working with over 200,000 pieces.
Aiming to recreate the original design as closely as possible, pieces were purposefully cut in imperfect lines to offer an authentic look.
Over 40,000 piece of original mosaic tiles were hand-washed and cleaned, while more than 20,000 were replaced with handcrafted finishing touches - cutting pieces by hand to fill odd gaps.
The restored mosiac will be ready for the launch of Melbourne International Comedy Festival on Tuesdat March 28.
