Gig Alert: Eye Of The Enemy

Spawned in the armpits of Melbourne, Eye Of The Enemy ripped their way into the metal scene in 2006 and haven’t stopped since. Show after show of unrelenting aggression and energy on the local scene, combined with the release of their incredible debut album Weight Of Redemption in 2010, led to tour supports with Amon Amarth (in 2010 and 2012) and Cradle Of...

Redcoats. Awesome.

Who went to the Redcoats album launch at Ding Dong on Saturday night? Phwoar, huh? Their debut full-length album is out now and it's well worth your beer money. Think of a pissed-off Black Crowes crossed with the Stooges and you're halfway there.

New Van Halen Album Already Completed?

Melodicrock.com reports that there's a rumour floating around that Van Halen have already completed a follow-up to this year's excellent A Different Kind Of Truth, and that it will be released in early 2013, in time for the next leg of the band's tour. As with all things Van Halen I'll believe it when I'm holding the CD/...

Sabaton Switches Venues

Due to the closure of The Prague, Swedish rockers Sabaton have moved their one and only exclusive headline show to a new bigger venue – The Corner Hotel. The gig is on Sunday January 13, 2013 and Sabaton will be supported by Eyefear and Black Majesty. Eyefear are currently tearing it up with the brilliant The Inception Of Darkness, while...

Joe Satriani Clinic Tour

The one and only Joe Satriani is coming to Australia for a masterclass tour in April 2013 – the first time he's done an extensive tour of this nature here. Joe will be talking technique and theory as well as sharing anecdotes about how various musical situations require different approaches to guitar. There'll also be a meet-and-greet, and a contest where a few...

DARKC3LL

Their press release claims that DARKC3LL have "literally exploded" onto the live music scene and the goth/industrial circuit in the last six months," which is probably a bit of press release hyperbole 'cos I'm sure a literal explosion would make the news. Nevertheless, they've supported the likes ofCombichrist, Static-X and Genitorturers, and now they're...

Steel Panther Destroy Melbourne

As I write this, it's Monday morning and I'm still recovering from the massive night that was Steel Panther. A few of us media folk were lucky enough to get bundled off in a stretch Hummer to get warmed up for the festivities with a few glasses of bubbly while the new Steel Panther DVD The British Invasionplayed at skull-crushing volume. Then we stopped...

New Devy Out Friday

The new Devin Townsend Project album Epicloud is slated for Australian release on Friday September 28. Devy recorded basic tracks in Perth while he was here for Soundwave 2012. In some ways it's almost like Addicted! part 2 – a couple of songs even have the same ‘exclamation mark at the end of the title' thing that Addicted! had going on, and which will probably...

Daray At DV8

Who went to the drum clinic by Dimmu Borgir drummer Daray on the weekend? I couldn't make it to the clinic itself (I was busy getting the house ready for my kid's Adventure Time-themed sixth birthday party, if you must know) but I rocked up to DV8 that evening to check out his DJ set, which was killer. Duray is a cool guy with great taste in metal, and...

Steel Panther Support Announced

Sydney's The Art have been named national support for Steel Panther's October Australian tour. These lads have built quite the reputation locally, and they managed to catch the attention of LA booker and former Guns N' Roses manager Vicky Hamilton. They've supported the likes of Them Crooked Vultures, Marilyn Manson and The Pixies. Their latest album is...

Refused Are Not Fucking Dead!

There are only a handful of bands that people regularly talk about never getting the chance to see live, one of them being Refused. On January 9, 2012 they announced to the world that they were indeed, in their words, not fucking dead. The reunion shows have been very well received indeed, and they're laying waste to Australia in November with dates in...

Soundwave Gets Slayer

The mighty Slayer head up the second announcement for Soundwave. That's three of the Big Four, alongside Metallica and Anthrax! The question everybody is asking on Facebook and Twitter is, will Megadeth be added too? Who knows? But that'd sure be huge. Other bands in announcement number two include Cypress Hill, Billy Talent, Gallows, Bullet For My Valentine, Bring...

Randy Blythe Free On Bail

As you've probably heard by now, Lamb of God singer Randy Blythe is now back in the USA. Prosecutors in the Czech Republic wanted him held behind bars because they said he might never return to the country, but their protests were overturned and Blythe was allowed to leave after posting $400,000 bail. He was being held on a manslaughter...

Nasum Say Hello & Goodbye To Australia

They've never toured Australia before, and they never will again: Nasum are here this month as part of their 20th anniversary/final farewell tour. Nasum terrorized the underground with their unique and unmistakable blend of brutal musical madness from their inception in 1992. With four full length albums, countless 7”s,...

Baroness – Yellow & Green

The mighty Baroness (pictured) release Yellow & Green next week. After the brilliant Red and Blue albums, Yellow & Green is a double-disc set which finds the band reigning in the metal slightly but replacing it with even more colour, variety, melody and texture. The general feeling out there is that this album is going to be utterly huge for the...

Rant Mode: On

This goes out to independent/unsigned bands. I've been writing about music for – gulp – 14 years now and there's something which has always bugged me. If you're writing a press release for your band, or if you're setting up a Facebook/Reverbnation/Bandcamp page, it's okay to use the last names of the band members! Don't be shy! I see this so often and it's one of my pet...

Metal Survey

I don't have the full details to hand at press time, but a student is writing a university paper focusing on lyrics and their impact within modern styles of music. To participate, go here – it's fun, and you get to listen to some kickarse tracks in various metal genres in the process.

Rush On Track For #2 US Debut

Yeah I know, I know, I've been talking about it a lot lately, but the new Rush album Clockwork Angels looks set to debut at #2 in the USA this week with sales of between 85,000 and 95,000 copies. Nice work! I have no idea how it's going to go in Australia but hopefully enough people will buy it that promoters will take notice.

Rising West Makes Live Debut

Queensryche spin-off band Rising West played their two gigs over the weekend in Seattle, and by all reports (and YouTube videos) singer Todd La Torre (Crimson Glory) did a great job. The band, which features four fifths of the current Queensryche line-up, was formed so the Queensryche lads could have some fun playing the early metal...

Queensryche Members For Queensryche Cover Band? Huh?

So what's going on with Queensryche, eh? First there were rumours of a knife fight in Brazil (although I hear from Highly Placed Individuals that that was a slight exaggeration), now four fifths of the band have formed a new band called Rising West with Crimson Glory singer Todd La Torre to play Queensryche songs and record new...

Well, what a crazy week in metal. Last weekend Black Sabbath played their first show with Ozzy in quite a while, with Ozzy's drummer Tommy Cluefetos standing in for Bill Ward, who is on the outs over a contract dispute. I wouldn't hold your breath for any Australian shows at the moment, but hopefully Tony Iommi's cancer treatment will be successful and they can schedule more shows...

As I write this week's column I'm listening to Frank Zappa's Broadway The Hard Way album. I'm in a big Zappa mood lately, partly because, well, I've been into Zappa since I was about 14 and used to rent the video of 200 Motels about once every three months, and partly because the recent Zappa Plays Zappa Australian tour was so awesome. But mainly because I'm excited that 18 titles...

Hi and welcome to this week's Crunch. I guess the big news in metal this week is the restructure at Roadrunner Records by label owner Warner. Roadrunner has done great things for metal for over 30 years now, and the folks at Roadrunner Australia are so dedicated to and passionate about rock and metal. They really understand what it takes to work with and for a metal audience, and I sincerely...
