VIVIAN CAMPBELL DEBUTS NEW HAIRSTYLE

I'm not a prayin' man (unless you count pledging allegiance to Lemmy before taking a swig of Jack Daniels) but won't you join with me in sending good vibes to Vivian Campbell? Currently with Def Leppard, formerly of Dio and Whitesnake, who is receiving treatment for Hodgkin's Lymphoma. He's halfway through his course of chemo...

NEW BABY ANIMALS OUT THIS WEEK

They're one of the greatest Oz rock bands ever – and all the more intriguing because it looked like their story was going to end with only two albums – but now the Baby Animals are back with This Is Not The End, their first album in over 20 years. It'll be released on Friday May 31 via Social Family Records, and to celebrate the release of the album the...

4ARM NAMES NEW GUITARIST

Rapidly-rising thrash masters 4ARM have named Markus Johansson as their new lead guitarist, after John Paul Glovasa was forced to make the difficult decision to step down due to serious family reasons ("It was by far one of the hardest decisions I have ever had to make," he says). With a bunch of European festival dates coming up the band began the search for...

R.I.P. JEFF HANNEMAN

As I'm sure you know by now, Slayer's Jeff Hanneman died last week of liver failure after battling a flesh-eating disease caused by a spider bite. Jeff was responsible for pretty much all of my favourite Slayer songs. Raining Blood? Jeff. War Ensemble? Jeff. South of Heaven, Seasons in the Abyss, Angel of Death, Dead Skin Mask? Jeff Jeff Jeff Jeff. The metal world...

NEW GAY PARIS VIDEO MEANS DEATH FOR US ALL

Getteth thee to YouTube to check out the video for Ash Wednesday Boudoir Party, the second single from Gay Paris's new album The Last Good Party. It's a rollicking dose of gravel-voiced post-Pantera, post-Devin-Townsend-Vampira-Style filth.

R.I.P CHRISSY AMPHLETT

At the time of writing (Monday afternoon) the sad news has just broken that Chrissy Amphlett of Divinyls has died of cancer aged 53. Amphlett basically wrote the book on being an awesome Aussie rock chick. My personal introduction to Divinyls was the song Back To The Wall when I was just a little tacker watching Rage. She'll be very, very missed. Chrissy's husband...

RIP CHI CHENG

By now you've no doubt heard the tragic news that Chi Cheng of Deftones has passed away four years after the car accident that left him in a partially conscious state. He was 42. His family broke the news on the oneloveforchi website: "This is the hardest thing to write to you. Your love and heart and devotion to Chi was unconditional and amazing. I know that you will...

R.I.P ANDY JOHNS

The rock world is currently in mourning for veteran producer/engineer Andy Johns, who was famous for his engineering work with Led Zeppelin as well as producing albums like Van Halen's For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge and Joe Satriani's The Extremist. No details were available at press time but tributes are all over social media from folks who worked with him and fans who...

PLEDGE ALLEGIANCE TO KISS

Canadian music journalist (and super nice guy) Mitch Lafon is organising A World With Heroes, a KISS tribute album featuring a bunch of well-known artists paying tribute to everyones' favourite fire-breathing, blood-spitting, cherrypicker-riding, zip-lining, flame-throwing rock band. A PledgeMusic campaign is under way to help fund the...

The Metal Dad Rant

Okay, so I have a six-year-old, right? We had a kid a bit younger than most of the other parents I run into at the playground, and in my neighbourhood the general trend seems to be to not have a child until you're nudging 40, so I find that I have to deal with a whole bunch of 40-somethings whenever I take little Junior to play on the swings or whatever. Now, if you'...

Vince Neil Lands In Hospital

At the time of writing, Mötley Crüe's Vince Neil is laid up in hospital in Sydney after having to cut the band's set short due to internal pains. Turns out he's been suffering from kidney stones, poor bugger, and he was operated on early Monday. Vince promised to be up and running for the band's Brisbane show with KISS and Thin Lizzy...

Phew. How about that Soundwave, eh? Last week was a fucking huge one for Melbourne metal fans, with a million sideshows as well as the big day itself. During the week I caught Periphery at The Espy, Stone Sour and Linkin Park at Rod Laver, This Is Hell, Anthrax and Fozzy at The Hi-Fi, and had interviews with Misha and Nolly from Periphery, Corey and Josh from Stone Sour and Adam and Jesse from...

Van Halen Comes To Sydney

This one really came out of nowhere. Van Halen are booked to play the Stone Music Festival in Sydney, a two-day event named in honour of 1974 cult Australian film Stone and timed to coincide with ANZAC day. It's on Saturday April 20 and Sunday April 21, with Van Halen headlining on the Saturday and Billy Joel on the Sunday. Other acts currently booked to appear...

Halestorm Win Grammy

Congratulations to Halestorm, who took out the best hard rock/metal Grammy for Love Bites (So Do I). They were up against some pretty stiff competition too: Megadeth, Anthrax, Iron Maiden, Lamb of God and Marilyn Manson. Within seconds the online commentary went into megadrive, both for and against the decision. I can see the point of those...

Extreme/Kotzen Tour Postponed

In news guaranteed to prompt the kicking of walls everywhere (or at least in my house), the Extreme/Richie Kotzen tour planned for April has been postponed amid a very cluttered touring market. Rescheduled dates will be announced soon though, so don't flip out, okay?

I've Been Everywhere, NAMM

Okay. So if you're keeping count, last week I wrote this column from a Starbucks in LA. This week I'm typing on a train somewhere on the way to Santa Barbara. It's just stopped because they have to "clear up a car on the tracks," which sounds pretty brutal. It's a weird denouement from an incredibly intense and metal-filled week at the...

Posted 23 Jan 2013 @ 1:51pm

I'm writing this week's Crunch jetlagged off my ass in L.A. I just went for a stroll around the Sunset Strip to get my head together and see the majestic new oversized Zakk Wylde Les Paul sculpture, pay my respects to the former Continental Hyatt House, bask in the history of the Comedy Store and contemplate eating a big fuck-off plate of fried mozzarella balls at the Rainbow. Seriously, if...

Sabbath & Bowie Drop Newsbombs

It's been quite the week for the sudden revelation of super well-kept secrets. First David Bowie announced his first album in ten years, The Next Day, which will be released in March. Bowie was widely believed to have completely retired from music, so nobody expected this at all. Turns out he had been working on the project in...

ROB CAGGIANO LEAVES ANTHRAX

Wow, this was a bit of a surprise. Guitarist Rob Caggiano has quit Anthrax. He's been their lead guitarist since 2001, aside from a short break while Dan Spitz returned for a mid-noughties reunion of the Among The Living line-up. Caggiano says, "This is an extremely difficult and emotional decision for me to make but my heart is just...

Posted 27 Dec 2012 @ 6:16pm

2012 was a kinda cool year for hard rock and metal. It probably won't go down in history as a 1967 or anything, but it was still pretty badass. Let's take a look back at some of the notable releases and events of the year.

Who left who in 2012? Who joined what? Chris Amott left Arch Enemy (again). Howard Jones left Killswitch Engaged and original...

New Ten Thousand Video

I was just about to write "Ten Thousand are one of my favourite Melbourne bands…" but that's not quite true. "One of my favourite Australian bands" is probably a bit more accurate. These guys have a killer live reputation and they have a knack for great sonic production too. They've just released the video for their song When I Get You and aside from the song...

It'll be their first time back in Oz in 20 years. This Is PiL was just named in Mojo Magazine's Top 50 Albums of the Year roundup. PiL will be playing stuff from the new one as...

Heaven The Axe Have An Enemy

Check out the video for the song Enemy by Heaven The Axe (from their album Sex, Chugs & Rock 'N' Roll). Parts of it were filmed at Smythesdale Courthouse, ten minutes outside of Ballarat, back in March with an army of extras (some of which I hope found out about it here in Crunch earlier this year).

Gig Alert: Eye Of The Enemy

Spawned in the armpits of Melbourne, Eye Of The Enemy ripped their way into the metal scene in 2006 and haven’t stopped since. Show after show of unrelenting aggression and energy on the local scene, combined with the release of their incredible debut album Weight Of Redemption in 2010, led to tour supports with Amon Amarth (in 2010 and 2012) and Cradle Of...
